*in a top secret base somewhere*Â
Alright men, in about three hours the enemy will arrive at this spot far away from the base. If all goes well, we will be able to trap them and strike them where they least expect. Got it?Â
Soldiers: Yes sir!Â
Uh private, what's with the hat and coat hanger?Â
Private: I'm using this to take the enemies hats and coats through kindness, sir!Â
Kindness?Â
Private: Yes sir! You heard that right! Here I'll give you an example. "May I take your hat, sir? May I take your-"Â
Alright, I heard enough. Now, prepare to go to your battle stations while I give you a review
*the soldiers looked on in confusion as I clear my throat*
Greetings there, fellow Eddheads! Lbat here with another episode review. Please ignore the soldiers who are standing near me.
Anyway, today I'll be reviewing Moving Targets which was one the very first episodes that I've seen back when I didn't know anything about Eddsworld. Without any further ado, let's put on our uniforms, put on our medals of honor, and combat boots as we head off to war. It's go time!Â
The PlotÂ
We're starting things strong when we are greeted by the title screen while the song War by Edwin Starr plays in the background. It hasn't been a minute and Moving Targets is already letting us know that it means business.Â
After the intro, we see Tom, Matt, Edd, and Tord doing various activities. Not those kinds of activities. Get your head out of the gutter. Tom, who was looking at a vacation brochure, asks Edd where they will be going for a vacation to which Edd replies saying that money has been rather tight for them meaning that can't afford to go anywhere.Â
Thanks Edd for reminding us of the current economic crisis after 2020 pandemic even though this episode was released during 2008 where the world was going through a big financial crisis which matched the 1929 Wall Street crash. But we're not here to talk about boring adult stuff, we're here to talk about Eddsworld.Â
After Edd tells Tom that they have low income, an ad on tv plays and it wasn't just any ad, it was an ad for the army. Suddenly Edd gets an idea and with the thrill of excitement running through him, he proudly announced that all for them will be joining the the army.Â
We then cut into a scene where the boys are on a map as they slip up into different directions as they look for the recruitment center. They eventually find the center and Edd signs a paper to join the army while the other three smile. Edd then says that they will never regret joining the army not even in a million years.
The screen turns black as we get white text in the form of a Spongebob time card that says "Substantially less than a million years later". After the black screen goes away, we see the boys in army uniforms while Tord is seen wearing a pickelhaube. When then see a new character approaching them and this new character is Sgt. Hilarson.Â
Sgt. Hilarson introduces himself to the soldiers and including the boys and lays down some basic ground rules such as only speaking when being spoken to. Edd asks Sgt. Hilarson if he can call him Hillary which Sgt. Hilarson responds to by launching Edd into the sky Team Rocket style with a single punch. Yeah, I don't think giving your drill sergeant a name is a good idea but good try though, Edd. I admire your bravery.Â
Sgt. Hilarson then says that he will be overseeing everyone's training and even comments on Tom's hair. This is where we learn that Tom's hair is called Steve and we would later learn, that Tom's hair has a skeleton in PowerEdd meaning that its own separate entity. So, Tom's hair gets shaved revealing his true final form.... a bowling ball.Â
We then get montage of everyone training. We see them tiptoeing through tires, crawling through a small space, then moving along with rope above barbed wire, and them getting AK-47s minus Matt who gets Rubik's Cube. I've always known those things were dangerous.
*looks at my shelf which was across my room that had a Rubik's Cube sitting on it*Â
I'm watching you!Â
Anyway, the solders shoot at a couple of dummies. There were a lot of missed bullets and oh, is that a boot just now? It's not very effective but go off king. Ah, there goes a grenade. Nice.Â
After the montage, we Edd and Matt in a helicopter where Matt tells Edd that they have no idea how to fly a helicopter. Edd proceeds to tell Matt that flying a helicopter is easy and grabs controls while humming the Flight of the Valkyries and just like that the helicopter starts flying.Â
On the ground, Tom, Matt, and Tord are seen marching behind Sgt. Hilarson as they repeat words to a army song. After that we see the boys cleaning the floor with toothbrushes while Sgt. Hilarson watches over them. Edd gets the idea to draw Sgt. Hilarson on the floor when the latter says that he wants to see his face in it. Sgt. Hilarson didn't seem to appreciate it and ends up throwing Edd right out of the roof.Â
We get another training montage but it's different from the first montage. The boys jump a wall expect for Matt and slide on rope but Matt bumps into the other three. The montage ends with another shooting practice on dummies. This time it goes much better as the boys managed to shoot the dummies with perfect aim. Oh yeah, someone gets ran over by a car that was on fire.Â
We then cut to Sgt. Hilarson congratulating everyone for completing their training as we see the boys all lined up from shoulder to shoulder looking like complete gigachads. However, it turns out that Sgt. Hilarson was just imagining the boys as gigachads while the four just stare at each other in confusion while Tord watches Tom point his gun to his eye.
You'll shoot your eye out, Tom.Â
After that, we get a scene of the boys in a helicopter. Edd points out that he can't believe that are being sent to war which Tom breaks the fourth wall stating that their training only took 1 minute and 34 seconds. Edd then says that he can't wait to show the world what he and the other three can do and prove they're not total idiots.
Aw Edd, that's sweet of you to say that. We Eddsworld fans see you more than just idiots. You are our precious beans and we love you.Â
Unfortunately, this heart felt moment gets interrupted when Edd accidentally presses a button causing all four of them to fall out of the helicopter. Edd, Tom, and Matt were quick to pull their parachutes expect for Tord who had a jetback and immediately burns their parachutes and them. Suddenly, Tord's jetpack files off without him which causes him to fall from the sky with the other three falling right behind him.Â
It's raining men, hallelujahÂ
It's raining men, every specimenÂ
Tall, blonde, dark, and leanÂ
Rough and tough and strong and mea-Â
*the soldiers all stare at me in confusion*Â
Why are you all staring at me for? I had to make the joke.Â
Anywho, It turns out that the boys are falling into the enemy base. Tord is the first one to come down and lands on a see-saw which breaks his fall. The other three fall on the other side of the see-saw which Tord looks on in fear only to sigh in relief when the see-saw breaks. However, Tord's relic doesn't last long when a hippo falls on him. Tom gets up and sees a tank in the distance.Â
Meanwhile, we get a scene with Paul and Yuu where Yuu hears a something and asks Paul if he heard it as well which Paul responds saying that it was the sound of no one caring.Â
Back with the boys, they all get into the tank as they realized that there wasn't any room and that they're in the complete darkness. We get a line from Tom telling Matt to get off his crotch and sit on... feel free to use your imagination on this one.Â
Despite having difficulty seeing in pitch darkness, the boys managed to get the tank moving which ends up destroying the walls of the base and presumably everyone in it. After awhile, Edd opens the door to the tank and sees Sgt. Hilarson who was looking at him with a shocked face. Edd then asks Sgt. Hilarson where the bad guys are as the enemy base crumbles into pieces right behind them and that's how the episode ends.
The VerdictÂ
So, that was Moving Targets and what did I think about it? Well, like I've mentioned before it was one of the first episodes watched and I remember loving it a lot. I still like it to this day. It is on my top 10 favorite episodes list.Â
Moving Targets has to be one of the best episodes that came from the Classic Era and it a lot of memorable moments. The tank part is the funniest part of the whole episode. Not only did the boys stole a tank, they also straight up destroyed a base with it and they didn't even know about it. That is just priceless.Â
You know it makes me wonder how the boys would handle defusing a bomb together. No seriously, I need to know this now.Â
Moving Targets is a must watch for both newcomers and already existing fans. So, if you're new to Eddsworld and don't know where to start, I would say watch Moving Targets, Spares, Zombeh Nation, WTFuture, MovieMakers, Hello Hellhole, and Hammer & Fail.
With that out of the way, my final rating for Moving Targets is.... a 10 out of 10.Â
Well, took a lot of out of me. Now, where I was before? Oh yeah, defending my base from being attacked. Alright men, prepare for battle!
Commander: Uh sir, the enemy attacked the base while you were doing your review
I'm sorry what?Â
*checks the surveillance camera which shows enemy forces destroying the walls of the base and taking out many of my soldiers*Â
Well damn... Umm, thank you all for making it this far into my review. What do you think about Moving Targets? Feel free to let me what your thoughts are. This is not a great way to end this so... I'll see you in the next reviewÂ
This has been Lbat and I'll see you next time. Take care and have a nice day or night. Bye
