Let's Talk About Fan Made Stuff Ep1: Old Friends

Posted by Lbat1901 - May 18th, 2021

So after getting my rant that talks about the current behavior that the EW crew been showing up a couple of weeks ago, there's been a lot of discourse going around. I mean a lot of discourse. Like seriously just go on Tumblr and type in "ew discourse" and you'll a whole bunch of allegations on the crew members of Eddsworld. There's even a discourse on Bing. I am not making this up.

In order to take my mind and basically your minds off of it, I will be looking at something that's fan made. Yep, fan made content based on Eddsworld and no, it's not TBATF. TBATF is a disgrace to Eddsworld as a whole.

Instead, I'll be looking at a fan project simply titled Old Friends.

First off it should be worth noting, that I don't usually review fan made content. I used to do it during my early days of being the fandom and having a different username. The thing is is that....well...they weren't good and they never saw the light of day, but overtime, I've improved greatly.

Also I plan making this some of series where I look over content made by the fandom depending on how well this does. The reason why being is that I have something in between doing episode reviews and rants.

Anyway, I've heard about Old Friends and by heard, I meant seeing art of it in the Eddsworld tag on Twitter. Technically this was months ago, going back to early January 2021. I was planning on checking it out, but I kinda forgot about until in mid April, I've received a Twitter DM from a person that goes by the name BananaBread. It turns out that they really liked reading my rant on Legacy Tord even going as to far to say that I have some interesting input on the character and the series. They then asked me if I can review Old Friends which their project and I agreed and they sent me a link to it.

And so I was off. I've read through the entire thing and you're probably wondering what it's all about. As much I would like to go over what happens in the story, there's people out there that don't want any spoilers and I respect that. So instead of spoiling the whole thing, I'll tell you what you need to know.

So Old Friends takes place after the events of The End and goes into the future where basically the Red Army took over London. The main characters are, and it's not really a surprise, Edd, Matt, Tom, and Tord. There are also more characters that also appear in the story and they are side characters that appear and those characters would be Paul, Patryck, several ocs that go by the names of Raymond, Fern, Igor, and Sebastian.

When I read Old Friends for the first time, I was just in blind and I wasn't expecting anything at all. There are 64 pages of content to go through and I have to say, it was a treat. The story was interesting and execution of it was really good. Each character goes through some troubling times which mixes into the main plot so well.

BananaBread, if you're reading up to this part right now, all I have to say is that, you did a mighty fine job at writing this. I am being serious I say this. The portrayal of the four boys plus the side characters were spot on. The dialogue and line delivery were amazing. I was so hyped to know what would happen next that I couldn't stop reading till it hit 3 o'clock in the morning. I was invested into the story that much.

I was basically at the edge of my seat, well bed, waiting on what might happen next. The pacing was also very good. I didn't have or found a single thing wrong. Even if I were to find something wrong, it wouldn't stop me from enjoying the story. It was easy to follow and it made sense.

So, like I always do at the end of my episode reviews, it's time give this lovely project a ranting. Instead of ranting it a number out of 10, I will use a ranking system of 5. Anyway without any delay, my final ranting for Old Friends is a 4.5 out of 5. What does that mean? It's means that it's good.

Alrighty then, that was my first small review of a fan made project that relates to Eddsworld. I know it's not perfect, but it's something. I might talk about other fan made content in the future and if you want me to talk about something, let me know. Oh and if you're a creator of an Eddsworld project, feel free to ask me if you want me to talk about it.

This has been Lbat1901 and I'll see you next time. Bye!
