Tales of Terror (review)

Posted by Lbat1901 - 3 hours ago

*you enter a room with smoke everywhere and after a few seconds, the smoke clears as you see me sitting at a desk, petting the top of a skull while a black raven sat on my right shoulder.

Greetings there, traveler, I've been expecting you.

Heh, I can tell by look on your face on why my raven even brought you here. Well, to keep things short, Eddsworld just dropped a new episode and not any episode. It's a horror themed episode.

I, Lbat or also known as Leo, will be your host on this spooky night as I will be reviewing Tales of Terror. Let's begin

The Review

The episode opens up with Matt walking through the rain as he appears to be an amusement park which was either closed for the day or just straight up abandoned. He then looks up and notices a tent that had a sign reading "House of Mirrors" and without even taking a moment, he ends up running inside it out with a smile on his face.

Inside the house of mirrors, Matt sees a bunch of, well, mirrors and he immediately begins checking them out. The fun ends when Matt checks his watch and sees that it reads 12am meaning that it was time for him to leave. Matt picks up a mirror to take with him only to get an eerie feeling as if he was being watched by someone or something.

Matt stood in place as he checks his surroundings as spooky music plays in the background as the feeling of uneasiness gets intense. Without wasting any time, Matt cautiously walks away from whatever was watching him until he stops in front of mirror as he comes face to face with a black silhouette of himself.

Matt moves his arm in front of the mirror as the silhouette mirrors his movement. He kept doing this until he notices a large crack on the roof that let out moonlight. Matt, feeling relieved at the sight of light, walks away only for a black arm to reach out and grab him. It turned out the silhouette that was in the mirror was sentient before it instantly pulls Matt through the mirror.

Matt gets up to see that he was now trapped behind the mirror and quickly runs over to the mirror and begins to bang it in hopes of being saved. Luckily, Edd comes to the rescue as he heard the sounds of Matt banging and starts looking around. Meanwhile, Matt was seen sitting down as he hears Edd's footsteps. Edd kept looking around until another silhouette shows up behind him and reaches out through the mirror to grab him and before anything happens, the screen turns to black.

We get a title card reading "Self Reflection" before cutting to a scene where we see Tom cutting through a fence that was by an abandoned building. Once the fence was cut, Tom makes his way to the abandoned building and begins walking around only to stop as he sees a video camera. Curious, Tom squeezes through a window and once he was inside, he goes to the camera and picks it up and begins testing it out.

He decided to test out by recording.... Flowey from Undertale???? Ayo???

However, the moment doesn't last as Flowey instantly gets crushed by a rock that came out from nowhere. Tom stops recording as he looks down at Flowey for a moment before Flowey gets crushed by the same rock that came out nowhere. What the hell?

After witnessing this, Tom gets uneasy only for a bird to come swooping right over his head as it lands on top of a beam right in front of Tom. Tom looks at the camera before using it again, this time to record the bird. The bird looks at him wondering "Yo bro, what's with camera?" only to get taken out by a raven. Tom looks up at the bird only to get taken out by the same raven from before as a drop of blood gets on Tom's face.

Tom sets the camera down to wipe the blood off his face before realizing that the camera was playing another a video without Tom recording anything. It showed Tom being attacked and presumably killed by ravens. Before he could do anything, we get a view of bunch of Ravens surrounding Tom which made Tom pull a Final Destination and immediately bolts out of the building with only a wound that bleed over his eye as he avoids death. Tom checks the camera to see that there wasn't any footage left and sighs in relief only for a car to come out of nowhere as the screen goes black as the sounds of the car hitting him can be heard.

We then get a scene of Edd coming home back from a long day of.... existing in the world I guess as he opens up a can of cola. He's like me for real, for real but I'm more of a Dr. Pepper type of person. Anyway, we see a clock ticking and we see Edd taking a shower before putting on his pajama, brushing his teeth, and heads to bed. The next day Edd comes home this time with his hair on fire and the cycle from the previous day happens.

Only for Edd to put on a teal shirt. Ehh??? Well, I guess Edd has more than just one shirt color. Nothing too out of the ordinary.

The next day Edd comes home a bit confused before opening up a can of diet cola.

*gasps* OH MY GOD! Guys look, it's Eduardo and he finally made an appearance in a new episode that wasn't a short this time. It took four years but he's finally back. I could cry.

Anyway, Edd realizes that he's drinking diet cola and immediately spits it out. We then see the clock from before but it was going backwards in time. We then see Edd taking a shower only to look out completely scared. Edd wastes no time and goes to bed as he realizes that he's having a Groundhog Day moment as he spends the next couple of days reliving the same routine over and over.

Ah yes, this is truly the definition of insanity.

On the last day, Edd goes to the fridge to grab a can of whatever soda it might be only to end the cycle by jumping out of a window which seemed to woke only for Edd to see that he's in a void of nothing. Edd then realizes that he's trapped behind a screen as the camera zooms revealing that he's in a tablet as we see a hand touch the screen. Edd then watches in horror a mouse icon slowly hovers over a loop option before clicking it and then clicking play meaning that the cycle repeats

We then get text on screen reading "Edd's World" just before the episode ends.

The Verdict

Well, well, well, I see that you've managed to stay towards the very end. So, that was the Tales of Terror

So, what do I think about it? I thought it was pretty alright for what it was. Tales of Terror manages to keep the viewer's attention long enough and delivered some bone chilling moments surrounding the main three despite the characters not talking which worked in its favor.

It was all about visual storytelling and actions speak way louder than words. The episode started off pretty strong with Matt's segment and only got stronger once Tom and Edd's segments came along.

Tom's segment was really strong all around its duration and it got my attention the most especially with the video camera that predicts future events and it was a nice nod to when Tom got a camera in Moviemakers. The whole future predicting camera kinda reminds me of a Goosebumps episode that centered around a haunted camera. If you're young and don't what Goosebumps is, I'll try keep it brief. Goosebumps is a book series where weird and scary stories happen and each one has different characters going through said stories.

This one Goosebumps story in particular, focuses on two kids that go to some building and in it they find a camera and basically steal it. They show the camera to their friends and would use to take pictures of themselves. However, weird begins to happen as some of their friends either straight up vanish from existence or just die. I remember watching the episode when there were reruns and it deeply disturbed me on how dark the premise and I still think about to this day.

Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah, Tom dying to a future predicting video camera. Like I said before, it was a good segment. My only gripe with this episode was that I thought it was way too short but overall, it's pretty good for a horror themed episode.

Do I recommend watching it? Well, if you want a good scare than go for it. I can see Tales of Terror getting more sequels where different stories happen just like The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror.

Anyway, this section of the video was pretty long. Let's wrap this up. My final rating for Tales of Terror is 8 haunted video cameras out of 10.

Alright, that's enough for me. Thank you for joining me for this review and I'll be seeing you in the next one. Oh and uh, my raven will show you the way out

Bye
